Starwood Hotels and Resorts has joined forces with Foursquare in efforts to improve their Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG) loyalty program.
SPG members who use this smart phone application will be rewarded for their check-ins through points, badges, and extra rewards when they check-in to participating locations. The hotel and resort brands under Starwood include: La Meridien, Four Points by Sheraton, Westin, The Luxury Collection, Aloft, Sheraton, Element by Westin, St. Regis, and W Hotels. Mashable.com reports “The partnership furthers Foursquare’s mission to reinvent loyalty programs and most closely resembles a similar program it started with Safeway last year.”
To start earning the extra awards, members just have to link their Starwood Preferred Guest number with their foursquare account, which will earn them 250 Starpoints just for linking them. When a member checks in on foursquare to a hotel where they had a confirmed reservation, they will earn 250 Starpoints. The actual stay is not checked in using the application, but when the user is at the location, they pull up the application on their smart phone and check into the hotel or resort where their reservation is. This promotion is set to run through July 31, 2011, as stated on their website. The program was also announced through their Starwood Preferred Guest Twitter account @SPGInsider.
It is easy for customers to participate with these four steps:
- Connect your SPG and foursquare accounts
- Find specials at participating hotels and resorts
- Check in on foursquare at participating hotels and resorts
- Earn Starpoints for foursquare check ins
In order for these rewards to apply, participants must be a SPG member, and have a foursquare account. If they don’t, each can easily be set up by visiting these websites: www.spg.com and www.foursquare.com.
Also, through May 31, 2011, users who check-in to over 1,000 of the participating locations could unlock a “Free Resort Night Reward.” This reward is hidden, and only will be discovered by a lucky winner. Along with this special reward, through July 31, 2011, those who utilize the foursquare and SPG partnership will be entered to win a resort get away, which could result in five free night awards and airfare. Becoming a mayor, which is unique to foursquare, can be done, as Reuters Online explains below:
“Someone with 30 foursquare check-in badges for SPG hotels may not necessarily be the “best traveler”, but Starwood will crown you mayor if you are the Starwood Preferred Guest member with the most check-ins during each month of May, June or July. Apparently your Starwood-Foursquare mayor title will give you some web space to share your story and travel tips.” (Reuters Article)
After these promotions end in July, the company has other, new incentives and rewards that are being planned now.
